Royal Family: The Queen’s chef reveals her favourite afternoon tea treats and one is really ordinary

Over the years, The Queen has eaten all manner of foods prepared by some of the finest chefs in the world. The 96-year-old monarch has visited more than 120 countries during her 70-year long reign, which means she has likely sat down to more formal dinners than anyone else in the world.

Despite the opportunities she has had to develop a more exotic or eccentric palette, the Queen has remained constitutionally British in her taste. There is one delicious English treat that the Queen could never be without, and is even said to indulge in it every day.

Her Majesty’s love for afternoon tea has been spoken about a number of times by former members of royal staff – with many of them confirming what the monarch likes to eat. And it would appear that The Queen’s treats of choice are incredibly normal!

The Queen enjoys many normal treats for Afternoon Tea

The tradition of taking Afternoon Tea is just about as quintessentially English as you can get. It is traditionally enjoyed between 3.30pm and 5pm and is usually served with a selection of sandwiches, scones, and small patisserie. Former royal chef, Darren McGrady worked for the Royal Family for 15 years, having received his formal training at the Savoy Hotel in London. McGrady has drawn back the curtain on what life was like working for one of the most famous women in the world.

Mr McGrady said in an interview: “When I started as a young chef at Buckingham Palace, it was fascinating to see how important afternoon tea was to the Queen.” He revealed that the Queen enjoys a “full afternoon tea of sandwiches and pastries”.

He says: “In terms of scones – one day plain and one day with raisins folded through. Also, tiny pastries like raspberry tartlets and a cut cake, honey and cream sponge, fruit cake, banana bread, or her favourite chocolate biscuit cake. It would all be ‘washed down with a delightful steaming hot cup of Earl Grey tea.”

Her Majesty joked that she keeps a marmalade sandwich in her handbag during her Platinum Jubilee

During Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, she made another hilarious cameo with a famous British character – this time it was the turn of Michael Bond’s Paddington Bear.

The monarch made a special pre-recorded cameo appearance alongside the much loved British storybook character and enjoyed a rather chaotic Afternoon Tea with him – much to the delight of the crowds and The Queen’s own family who were watching from the royal box.

The skit saw Paddington drink all of their tea and destroy the cakes before he offered The Queen a marmalade sandwich from his hat. The 96-year-old monarch then had the crowds in hysterics as she revealed that she too kept a marmalade sandwich in her handbag “for later”.
